School Board Rejects Home School Athletic Request
Abingdon's District 217 school board held a short, regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday night.

The board, by their own admission, is currently focusing it's attention on items of little consequence until the new consolidated District 276 takes over.

Voters of the district decided to approve a consolidation with the slightly smaller Avon district in November's elections.

One of the items in contention Wednesday night was whether or not to allow students, who happen to be home schooled, to participate in the district's athletic teams.

Rick Ruhl, representing Ruhl's Farm School, spoke before the board for the second time saying he had contacted other districts about the problem.

"The thing that you find out is a lot of schools -- just like our school -- has [sic] not changed their policy in years," Ruhl said. "In contacting a lot of schools, and communicating with them, the reason that they haven't changed them is they've never been asked."

At their last meeting, board members instructed Ruhl to take his concerns to the new consolidated board.

Deliberations on the matter were short with Superintendent David Black saying he had nothing different to say from the previous meeting.

The board voted unanimously to keep their current policy of disallowing home schooled students to participate in the districts sporting clubs.

The consolidated district meets Thursday night at 7 o'clock in Abingdon.
