Monmouth Farmland Plant NOT Affected by Company Restructuring
The owner of a meat processing plant in Monmouth says that plant apparently will not be affected by a company-wide restructuring.

Virginia-based Smithfield Foods Tuesday announced it is cutting 1,800 jobs company-wide, and will be closing six plants, transferring that production to other facilities. Smithfield Foods owns Farmland Foods and the plant in Monmouth. The Monmouth plant is NOT included in the plant closure or restructuring list, while the others are expected to close by the end of the year.

Local plant officials have not yet returned calls for comment, but a company website says the plant employs 1,400 people and has been in operation since 1964.

Smithfield Foods says company's seven independent operating companies will be reduced to three under the restructuring -- making them a part of the Smithfield Packaging Company, John Morrell Company, or Farmland Foods.

The company says the restructuring will increase efficiency and reduce some overhead costs, making the company more competitive and more profitable.

Smithfield Foods will take a number of pre-tax charges over several fiscal quarters as a result of the restructuring.
