CSC President Not Fond of Changes to Illinois FOIA Law
The president of Carl Sandburg College says his and other institutions have enough to deal with, without worrying about changes that took effect with the new year in the state's Freedom of Information Act.

Tom Schmidt got passionate in his dislike for the changes at the most recent CSC Board meeting, where members, by law, had to appoint a FOIA officer.

Schmidt says the changes, which include shorter response time for the response to FOIA requests, stem from a problem with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich, and that his college shouldn't be held accountable.

"Rather than deal with that...apply a new law to everybody under the expectation that somehow all the problems from Cairo to Chicago are going to be solved because everybody's going to have the opportunity to know all things at all times."

Schmidt says complying with the new laws isn't the problem -- and the college has touted complying with them as quickly as possible.

But Schmidt says doing so means an additional cost to colleges and municipalities must now fight for exemptions already given to local school districts -- which don't allow for the examination of teacher and school administrator evaluations.
