Giving Amtrak Riders A Place To Store Luggage
With Galesburg being a layover destination for Amtrak commuters, the Knox County Tourism Council is looking at ways to ease travelers' stress levels by providing some kind of secure luggage station.

When people get off the train in Galesburg it could be another few hours before they're boarding their next train.

People looking for things to do to fill that time have no place to securely keep their luggage and are forced to drag it with them.

The Tourism Council believes this is hurting business and preventing people from discovering Galesburg.

But the problem lies in finding the right storage area for people. Tourism Director Judy Guenseth told the board in the end finding a solution really comes down to money and insurance.

"The problem that we're running into is liability and cost," says Guenseth. "Some of the shops will take and say 'well I'll hold your luggage back,' but then once you go into business and say that you're actually going to store someone's luggage you incur the liability if someone says that something's missing."

There is also the possibility that Amtrak could be doing something about the luggage issue at some point down the road.

However, Guenseth says the problem is that there's a need now for a luggage station.

One idea was taking over a building across from the station but it would cost 70-thousand dollars to buy the building on top of staffing cost and Guenseth says they just don't have that kind of money in the budget.
