Chamber Members Oppose Minimum Wage Increase
The majority of Galesburg businesses responding to a survey indicate they don't like Governor Pat Quinn's proposal to increase the state minimum wage to 10-dollars per hour one bit.

Chamber Executive Director Steven Brody says of 147 businesses that responded to his online survey this week, 87-percent of them stated they don't approve of the increase, while 11-percent were in favor of it, and another two percent just didn't care.

Brody tells WGIL those who voted no are sending a strong message.

"They really think that this would have a crippling effect on their ability to effectively run a business, to potentially expand their workforce, to expand business," says Brody. "I did get some responses back that said they would seriously have to consider reducing their workforce, not being as generous in offering a wage to their employees."

Brody says the businesses that indicated they did support the minimum wage increase felt that in order to have a good workforce, a liveable wage should be paid. They also cited that the wage was good given the rate of inflation.

Brody says the results have been forwarded to Knox County's representatives in the Legislature, and to the State Chamber of Commerce.
