Bustos Addresses Chamber Crowd
The Keynote Speaker at last night's Galesburg Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner was a newly elected representative.

17th District Representative Cheri Bustos addressed those in attendance with what is going on in Washington and how it applies locally.

The Chamber was recognizing local businesses with the dinner as well as a few government representatives.

Among the items Bustos discussed was the impact that the sequester might have on the 17th district, including job and program loss.

Bustos tells WGIL the sequester has to do with everything the federal government touches.

"This is a horrible way to do business," says Bustos. "It's been called the meat cleaver approach as opposed to doing work in a smart, strategic, thoughtful way and that's how we ought to be doing budgeting."

Bustos spent the day yesterday touring several Galesburg businesses and meeting with the Mayor to better understand the area. She tells WGIL that visiting with businesses helps her know what's important to those she represents.

"Why I met with small business owners [yesterday], why I met with the Mayor [yesterday], why I toured the NAEIR's Warehouse was to find out what are the needs of Galesburg? What are the needs of small business owners? I'm continuing, in a sense, my listening tour that started during my campaign."

The Chamber recognized several of its new staff members. Chamber Board Chair Jerry Reynolds called this year at the Chamber: the year of change.
