Alderman Undeterred by Bike Path Grant Rejection
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 2/4/13 The City of Galesburg has missed out -- for now -- on a grant that could have paid for most of an important project that an alderman championed.

The state announced last week a number of grants that would be given out under the state's Transportation Enhancement Program, but a proposed bike path extension from the "Villas @ CSC" Apartment complex to the Carl Sandburg College campus was not one of them.

Seventh Ward Alderman and bicyclist Jeremy Karlin was behind the project, and tells WGIL he wants to keep trying.

"I'm confident that if it's brought back before the Council, it will receive support, just like it did the last time," Karlin said. "My fellow council members saw the need for it -- in particular, the South Lake Storey Road bike project, because...we have a new part of our community that lives on South Lake Storey, that commutes by bicycle or by walking to Carl Sandburg College."

Karlin says he'd like to see what the successful applications for the grant looked like, and talk with the state about how the city can do better the next time.

In the meantime, Karlin says a lot of education to bicyclists and motorists alike is needed -- in part, to make sure bicyclists know where they can and can't ride safely, and how drivers can safely deal with bicyclists in the road.
