Carl Sandburg College Board Discusses Sequester
It wasn't on the agenda, but the sequester was a point of concern at Thursday night's Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees meeting.

With the sequester now in effect, the College is expecting to see cuts of 5 or 6 percent to many of its programs.

Uncertainty was the prime focus of the board with respect to the sequester as the length or even permanence of the cuts remains unknown.

Carl Sandburg College President Lori Sundberg told the group that the college wont act right away.

"We don't know how long that will last, if it will be forever, if it will be for a short period of time," says Sundberg. "So short-term we're not going to make a lot of changes we're going to have to obviously absorb the cut and then on the basis of how long it will last, make further decisions later."

Sundberg, along with Board Member Tom Coleclasure and Student Trustee Rachel Grzela recently returned from a trip to Washington D.C.

Those who traveled said the representatives they spoke with weren't terribly confident about a deal being reached. Sundberg tells WGIL that they discussed a myriad of topics with the representatives.

"Hopefully the legislators will come together and negotiate something that is a little more strategic type of cuts," says Sundberg.

Cost saving measures weren't given in abundance by Sundberg. On a more positive note, the trustees heard from their favorite faculty and staff representatives on recognition the college received, including: winning an award for its website and recognition through an art competition.
