School Board Looking to Adopt Middle School Concept
It might say Abingdon Middle School around the school but that's not what school district 217 is teaching under.

At the District 276 Abingdon/Avon School board meeting Thursday night the board heard a presentation from Abingdon Middle School History teacher Mike Brown.

Brown explained to the board there is in fact a difference between Junior High and Middle School and it's not in the name.

"Philosophically, to me, the difference is that the middle school has student centered instruction versus curriculum driven instruction," says Brown.

Brown says this does not mean in a middle school setting you don't get smart kids and smart people.

He say the the difference is what drives teachers is a student centered concept.

Brown outlined the positives of the Middle School concept, such as a flexible schedule.

He says a flex schedule would keep the three grades from running into each other and reduce the risk of bullying.

It would also according to Brown give teacher 90 minutes to teach two subject and that teacher would have control on how much time they'd like to spend on each.

The board didn't make any decision on adopting the middle school concept.
