Federal Stimulus Money Helps Feed Illinois Residents
The federal stimulus package is helping residents in Illinois who have trouble putting food on the table.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin recently announced that food banks in the state will start receiving truckloads of food next month, purchased with federal stimulus package funding.

Speaking at a Catholic Charities food bank in Des Plaines, Durbin said with the number of struggling families on the rise, food banks in the state have seen a tremendous increase in demand.

Durbin says help is oon the way for families who have trouble keeping food on their tables along with food pantries that struggle to keep food on their shelves.

"President Obama's stimulus bill, the recovery bill that we just passed a few weeks ago, is going to put additional payments into food stamps. That's additional money for these folks to buy food at grocery stores so that they can keep their families together while they're struggling with unemployment and struggling with jobs that don't pay as much as they need."

Food programs to benefit from the stimulus package include schools in the state to buy supplies to help prepare meals for students ($3-million), $6.3 million for soup kitchens and food pantries, $3.7 million for senior meal programs, and $4-million for nonprofit and faith-based organizations to help provide emergency food and shelter.
