Illinois Sees Job Growth But Higher Unemployment
CHICAGO (AP) -- The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Illinois was 11.5 percent in March. That's 2.3 percentage points higher than March 2009 and a tenth of a percentage point higher than in February.

But the Illinois Department of Employment Security said today that the state added 3,000 jobs in March. It was the third consecutive month that Illinois saw job growth. The seasonally adjusted national unemployment rate for March was 9.7 percent.

During March, 765,000 people were unemployed in Illinois.

Department Director Maureen O'Donnell says it isn't surprising for Illinois to see job growth alongside an increase in the unemployment rate. She says the growth offers "cautious optimism" that the recession may be "softening."
