Education Reform Bill Headed to Governor's Desk
(IRN)-It's on to Governor Pat Quinn for Senate Bill 7, which promises sweeping reforms of education in Illinois. The element getting the most attention statewide is that it's easier to fire bad teachers, regardless of how long they have been on the job. Performance would also take precedence over longevity in deciding layoffs.

In Chicago, the teachers union is upset about portions it says were put in at the last minute during negotiations. While the bill passed almost unanimously as is, the union's concerns are the subject of negotiations which are already, to quote one person involved, "complex." A separate bill is planned.

State Representative Monique Davis (D-Chicago) was the only representative to speak out against the bill, saying the restrictions on Chicago teachers' right to strike are discriminatory.

SB 7 has passed the House, 112-1-1, and goes to the governor.
