Committee Formed to Fundraise for Lake Storey Bike Path
Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza has formed another committee -- this time, it will raise funds to create a bike path between Carl Sandburg College and the new apartment complex for students.

The Galesburg City Council this week supported a resolution backing Knox County's application for a state grant that will pay 80-percent of a proposed one-point-one million dollar bike path along South Lake Storey Road from the entrance to C-S-C, to the intersection of Henderson Street and South Lake Storey Road.

Mayor Sal Garza wants to raise the remaining 20-percent, or about 285-thousand dollars.

"I'm establishing a dedicated Lake Storey Walking, Running, and Biking Path Committee to fundraise for the local share," Garza said. "In this effort, I will lead this particular endeavor. And I'm also very pleased to name Marv Dahlberg, our city's treasurer, as the committee's co-chair to help provide leadership and funding support as well."

Garza says it's not a top-tier priority project as outlined by the City Council in their goal-setting session, but he's going through with it anyway because he feels it will be a good thing that will bring the city together.

While the County is applying for the grant, Garza says they're not contributing money to the work.

Construction, if successful, could begin next year.
