City Council Seeking Bids for Garbage Work
What's normally a formality wasn't unanimously approved by the Galesburg City Council.

Aldermen on a 6-2 vote this week voted to notify Waste Management that the city's current contract with them will not be extended again, allowing the city to go out and seek competitive bids on the matter.

One of the "no" votes came from Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming, who says he didn't like how bids came out the last time they were sought.

"The recommendation back then was the same to open it up for proposals," Fleming said. "As I recall those bids weren't even close, Waste Management came in way under the other two bids. And they do a good job, we already have a contract. I don't think we need to be spending our time entertaining other bids-- unless somebody has approached the (city) administration saying they could do the job for less."

City officials say seeking bids is the right thing to do, and a good way to cover the city.

The other "no" vote came from Second Ward Alderman Wayne Dennis, who did not explain why he voted no.

The city's current contract with Waste Management expires with the end of the year.
