Galesburg Gets Word About Stimulus Funds for Transit Improvements
Officials with the City of Galesburg say they hadn't heard of any movement on their application for grant money that would make some improvements to the city's transit system until not too long ago.

City Associate Planner Julie Main told a public hearing Thursday that she had heard nothing on an application the city made in January for federal stimulus dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation until she received a letter June fourth, which said they have tentatively laid out what would get funded.

Main says if approved, the money will, among other things, help expand Galesburg Transit's fleet. "$325,000 to purchase a heavy-duty bus, $50,000 to purchase four mobile column lifts, which would be for maintenance work on the buses, $105,000 to purchase automated fare boxes for the fixed-route buses, and $100,000 to purchase new bus shelters, which would go at various places all over town," Main said. "That is a total of $580,000 for these projects."

Main says if they're approved, construction on the bus shelters wouldn't occur until next construction season, but the city could get the new bus by the end of the year.

The automated fareboxes would replace the current fare collection system, providing riders refillable cards to use, eliminating the need to do things like physically printing transfers.

Main says those are just a few of a number of projects they put together for the grant, but says the city is glad to get whatever money it can get.
