Lawmaker Praises Halt on Pension Vote
A local lawmaker says the leadership in the legislature ultimately did the right thing in putting a stop to consideration of pension reforms.

State Representative Don Moffitt says after 11th hour changes, and a switch from considering things like school districts being required to fully fund teachers pensions, he thinks it's a good thing that lawmakers will likely be called back sometime over the summer to deal with the matter again.

The Gilson Republican tells WGIL the last-minute wrangling, and about-face after about-face, just wasn't right.

"Speaker Madigan wants to make that shift," Moffitt said. "So, he signed it over [to House Republican Leader Tom Cross]. Leader Cross put an amendment on the bill to remove that shift on to the local property tax payers, and then the Speaker said he would not support the bill, and most of his caucus indicated they would not. So...he shifted it over but immediately said he wouldn't support what Leader Cross was trying to advance."

Moffitt says he thinks a combination of matters will end up solving the state's pension crisis, but he's not in favor of shifting the burden solely to taxpayers.

He says the state got the pension system into the mess it's in, and now must make it right.
