Budget Deficit Projected for Galesburg School District
The Galesburg School District will have to use reserves next year in order to keep its financial picture in tact.

The District-205 School Board's Budget Committee learned Thursday that on top of what was believed to be an eight-hundred-thousand dollar cut in state funding this past year, another eight-hundred-thousand dollars has been cut, leaving the district with about 89-percent of the funding the state promises to pay annually.

That's leading to a deficit of over 600-thousand dollars in the district's education fund, and Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill says that means the board will have to do something it normally wouldn't do, present an unbalanced budget, and use a million dollars in district reserve money.

"You'll be asked to take an action that you've not been asked to do in the past, and that's to suspend your policy so that we can proceed along this line," Cahill said. "If the board would fail to pass that, then we'd have to basically come up with a million dollars in cuts-- and I'm telling ya, you won't be able to do it."

A couple other of the district's operating budget line-items will see deficits as well.

As for other things that can be done, Cahill says the district may have to look at items approved but not-yet implemented in the district's "Operation Program/Job Save" plan.
