City Council Hears about Garbage Options
The Galesburg City Council so far seems to like what they're getting out of their current garbage and yard waste programs.

Aldermen Monday night suggested little changes to the city's waste program as it gets set to seek bids on services once the current contract with Waste Management expires at the end of the year.

One thing aldermen did want to see improved is the city's recycling program. Several aldermen and the mayor were part of a test area where 96-gallon containers were provided to put recycling in.

Waste Management's Dave Schaab told aldermen it worked better than anyone could have expected.

"To say that there was a 35-percent increase in weight means there was conceivably a 50-60-percent increase in volume," he said. "Particularly because in the bin system that we have now-- as you mentioned that when driving through town you see the bins that are there and what's blown about-- the things that people are reluctant to put into a bin system now are things that readily do blow away. (These are) the larger empty bottles, the one gallon sized bins, things like that."

Aldermen said they also wanted to stick with a five-year contract versus longer ones, and possibly expanding opportunities for hazardous waste or electronics disposal.

The City Council is expected to vote on sending out a Request for Proposals for waste services at its July 16th meeting.
