District-205 Implements New Cell Phone Policy
Today's infatuation over mobile phones and other portable electronic devices is impacting the Galesburg School District's policy prohibiting those items.

The District-205 Board of Education last week approved revising its codes of conduct policy to reflect the times. Board member Mike Panther says it will no longer require students to keep their cell phones stored away and off their person.

"It's going to be changed to must powered off and out of site in District-205 buildings during school hours unless an administrator has given permission for them to be used," Panther said.

That means students are allowed to be in possession of them-- which Board member Bob Lindstrom says is unnecessary and troublesome.

He was the only one to vote against the measure, citing his need to give up his phone when entering a courthouse. But school board Vice President Tom Colclasure says he'd want his own children to have their phones.

"They have to walk home, they have to ride their bikes-- a lot of people out there aren't friendly to kids," he said. "I want them to be able to give me a call, or give somebody else a call if need be. So if that means having their phone on them during the day, I'm all for it."

Colclasure adds that a school is entirely different from being in a courthouse.

Panther admits the difficult aspect of the policy will be determining when it's appropriate to grant permission to using the devices.
