Longtime Fixture in Galesburg School District Retiring
An educator whose spent twenty-one years in Galesburg schools is hanging up his District-205 boots.

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes is retiring from the district, but not from teaching. He says he's next going to run Knox College's student teaching program.

Estes says Galesburg has proven to be a community of great people. He tells the WGIL Morning News that's been most evident from the district's summer lunch program.

"This is a town made up of wonderful people that will pull together and do the right thing for the community<" Estes said. "And that Lunch Spot, that is just an example. They understand kids might be going hungry over that long break, and we can't have that happen. The sense of community here is something unique and special."

Estes says he wanted to retire two years ago but Superintendent Gene Denisar gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. He says it's special to now walk away beside his wife-- who's retiring also after thirty-four years as a third grade teacher.

Estes says he's ditched his tie collection and has already begun forking many of them over to his son, who's a school counselor.
