Fiber Optic Connectivity Coming to All Knoxville Schools
There will soon be more sophisticated connectivity throughout every building in the Knoxville School District.

This week the District-202 Board of Education signed off on a proposal for a Fiber Optic Cable Rerouting Project. Superintendent Steve Wilder tells WGIL there's presently fiber optic compatibility at the junior and senior high schools, but not at the elementary school and district offices.

"Both of those connections are wireless," Wilder said. "And while those have allowed us to work in both of those facilities, one of those things we would like to do is to install some fiber optic cable that would give us a hard-line connection to the data-center, which is located in the high school, to all the buildings in the district."

Wilder says the central database will be transitioned into the new high school once construction begins next year. He says he expects the installation to be completed by the fall.

According to Wilder, a cost estimate has not yet been made available by their architect, Bloomington-based BLDD. But he says the work falls under financing for the new high school.
