City Goes Forward Looking Into Pennycress
Some details are still being worked out, but the City of Galesburg is officially partnering with a company to try and get farmers to start growing a unique type of crop here.

The city announced in a press release Friday it along with the city's Entrepreneurs, Business, and Innovators network, are partnering with Pennycress Energy, LLC, in an attempt to get more farmers to grow the crop the company is named after.

Pennycress Energy officials say they could get farmers $100 an acre for the crop grown primarily in the winter, and the company will pay for the seed and for planting, and will help bankroll the harvesting of the crop.

In return, the city says, if enough farmers in the area agree to take part in the crop, a plant could be built storing the seed and crushing it, and creating as many as 30 jobs.

Pennycress, they say, can be pressed for oil for alternative energy, and possibly produce more oil than from soybeans.

The city and the EBI Network are planning informational meetings over the next several months, but say you can call them if you want to take part.

Pennycress Energy praised the city, saying the atmosphere created by the city for them is important to have for any company looking to grow.
