Illinois Republicans Not Surprised To See Burris Decide Against Run in 2010
Some Illinois Republicans will little note nor long remember the tenure of Roland Burris as the junior Senator from Illinois.

State Representative Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), a member of the impeachment committee which questioned Burris about his dealings with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich, says he will always carry an "asterisk forever" and never regain his reputation.

Some blame Durkin for allowing Burris to wriggle off the hook during the impeachment hearings. "It's important that the right questions are asked," says Demetra DeMonte of Pekin, Illinois' National Republican Committeewoman. "However, (with) some people it's all legalese, and if you don't ask a question in a particular way, they will not answer it."

DeMonte says she is excited about the opportunities that await the Republicans in the 2010 election. However, she will not be able to count on Durkin to fill a ballot slot above that of state representative - he says he is running for re-election. Durkin ran for the Senate in 2002, losing to U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).
