Abingdon "Peaces Out" for One of Its Own Fighting Cancer
UPDATED 3:23 p-m 7/19/09 Hundreds of people took advantage of a cool, beautiful Sunday afternoon to show their support for an Abingdon teenager who's battling cancer.

The sound of music filled Abingdon's Rotary Park as part of "Peace Out in the Park," a benefit for 15-year old Whitney Cudd. Cudd will be a junior in the fall at Abingdon High School. She was diagnosed earlier this year with Adrenocortical Carcinoma.

The music was provided by the Abingdon United Methodist Church Praise Band, Laura Lee Rose, Chris Postin, Touch of Country, The Johnson Family and Brett Chatterton.

The four-hour event also included food and several games and activities, like face painting by Chuggo and Rusty the clowns from the Mohammed Shrine Temple in Bartonville for the International Shriners Hospitals for Children of America.

Donations were accepted to help defray medical costs.

Abingdon United Methodist Church Pastor Paul Dinges, who led a service in the park to begin the day, says the event reflects the constant outpouring of love and support for Whitney Cudd and her family.

"We're enjoying some wonderful music and some wonderful picnic atmosphere and it's all for a good cause. It just continues to amaze me how this community continues to come together time and time again, not only for Whitney, but for many others who are in need. It just amazes me. We are truly living in a blessed community that is able to do that."

A page set up at Caringbridge.com tells Whitney Cudd's story, gives frequent updates about how she's doing, offers a guestbook people can sign and accepts monetary donations. You can go to her page by clicking on the link www.caringbridge.org/visit/whitneycudd.
