Former Tourism Director Passes Away
FIRST REPORTED 3pm 7/16/12 A former Galesburg resident that worked hard to increase local tourism while she was here, has passed away.

Family members and friends confirm Monday that Diane Bruening passed away in Galesburg at the age of 61. Bruening retired a year and a half ago as Executive Director of the Galesburg-Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and retired to the Huntsville, Alabama area, but recently came back to visit family, when she had a stroke.

Bruening told WGIL back in late-2010 upon announcing her retirement, when she came to Galesburg in the early 90's, she knew she'd love it here.

"I felt from day one that I landed here that Galesburg was a great place," she said. "As the years went by, I took a lot of interest in the history of Galesburg. And I'm going to miss getting to share that information with people of what a great place Galesburg is."

Bruening was replaced at the CVB by Judy Guenseth, who describes Bruening Monday as a very gracious and loving person.

Former CVB co-worker of Bruening's, Jean Jacobs, tells WGIL she was great to work with, and cared about the families of her co-workers just as much as she did her own.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 10am at Bethel Baptist Church. Visitation is Wednesday from 5 to 7pm at Galesburg's Hinchliff-Pearson-West.
