West Nile Discovered in Warren County
FIRST REPORTED 6am 7/4/12 Add Warren County to the list of counties in the state once again dealing with a mosquito-borne disease.

The Warren County Health Department says testing in Warren County indicates that West Nile Virus is present.

Health Department Administrator Jenna Link says the virus was present in mosquito batches collected Monday in Monmouth, and says the extreme heat is to blame for the mosquito activity.

he virus, officials say, can be transmitted through mosquito bites, which gets to the insects through possibly infected birds.

Most people, the health department says, don't exhibit any symptoms, but some say illness or death can occur in more vulnerable people, especially those over 50. So Link says it's important to eliminate any standing water on your property so mosquitoes don't have a breeding ground, make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens, and, of course, wear mosquito repellant containing DEET, wear shoes and socks outdoors, and consider long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

Warren County would be the 18th county having a positive West Nile Virus test this year, the closes other county being Peoria.

There are no human cases of West Nile yet this year in Illinois.
