Alderman Proposes Job Bank for Abingdon Residents
An Abingdon council member foresees a way his city can provide some relief for those struggling to find work.

Sam Burgress says city hall could become a resource with contact information for plumbers, painters, and other handymen. He says residents can utilize their services if they need a quick fix at home.

Burgress says the city wouldn't be contracting these workers. But because Abingdon would be acting as a liaison of sorts, attorney Jack Ball says there could be a potential legal issue if the work isn't done as expected.

"The city somehow, by even just furnishing a name off a list, is liable," Ball said. "What you're asking me to do -- and I'm willing to take a look at it -- is try to see what theories might be out there that would cause problems."

"If it's something that can create more problems that it's going to do, forget it," Burgess said.

"I don't know. It's a great idea, it sounds like. I'd be more than happy to look at it," Ball said.

According to Burgress, the public service would also benefit those residents who are unable to afford paying a professional.

Burgress says it's not unreasonable that a resident can call Abingdon City Hall for contact information. Otherwise, he says a bulletin board could be set up there for the public's viewing.
