Agronomist Sees No Relief for Corn
A local agriculture expert is still optimistic -- at least in part -- about the local corn crop despite almost two weeks of searing heat and in some spots, virtually no rain.

Agronomist Lance Tarchione says while some parts of the state have had to write off their corn crops due to dryness, that's not necessarily the case here yet.

Tarchione tells the WGIL Mid-Day growing up to this point hasn't been as bad as you might think.

"The reality is we've gotten through pollination relatively well, some of the crop hasn't pollinated yet-- so that may still be a little iffy," he said. "But all the early planted corn is still pretty well pollinated, so it's just going to be a matter of how many kernels do we lose of that ear. And the ones that we keep, how small are they going to be potentially and what are they going to weigh."

Tarchione says farmers could make some assumptions on kernel size and weight right now, but it's too soon to tell how much will be lost, even though moisture chances don't look good.

As far as soybeans go, Tarchione says they're not suffering yet.
