Illinois Law to Boost Demand for Locally Grown Food
Governor Pat Quinn has signed a bill into law that is supposed to help the farm industry, and provide more fresh produce to "food deserts."

The new law sets goals for state government and government-funded entities to boost sales of Illinois-grown food. The goal for state government agencies is 20 percent. The goal for schools and other state-funded entities is 10 percent.

The bill’s sponsor, State Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago), says it'll help lots of Chicago-area families gain access to fresh produce, which is scare in many communities.

Jim Braun, coordinator of the Illinois Local Food, Farms, and Jobs Council, says the Illinois-grown food law will increase farm jobs and target "food deserts" in the Chicago area where you're hard pressed to find fresh produce.
