Assessment of Library's Construction Efforts
The president of the Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees says the process by which a new library could be constructed is going pretty fast.

Martin Reichel says the process, including site selection, picking an architect, and other things is going likely quicker than the board may otherwise go, in part, because of that state grant that could be made available as soon as next year.

Reichel tells the WGIL Morning News that grant if received could be significant.

"It could pay up to three-quarters of the construction costs, which is estimated to be anywhere from $15 million to $20 million," Reichel said. "So we can't let this go by. We have to move forward and jump through all the hoops the state wants us to. Part of the hoops is purchasing -- or at least having an ownership in the property assured."

Reichel says mostly due to public input, the library still wants to build on the site of the former Super 8 on West Main Street near the new overpass.

He says the square footage of a new library would be about double that of the current facility.

A public meeting is being held Wednesday to help the board identify which type of construction process it should move forward with.
