High Praise for Student Housing Complex
The president of Carl Sandburg College says technically, it's not the college's project, but it's one that she's proud of and has had a serious effect on the college.

Lori Sundberg was on hand for an open house Tuesday celebrating the new apartment complex called "The Villas @ CSC" on the site of the old Regency Hotel at Henderson Street and South Lake Storey Road. Under Illinois law, community colleges can't directly provide student housing. So the college turned to a developer that has worked on similar projects at other institutions.

Sundberg tells WGIL having the Villas has done wonders for the college already, before a student has even moved in.

"Our enrollment right now is five-percent up over last year, and we're one of few reporting colleges that have an increase," Sundberg said. "A lot of them are experiencing decreases. We think [the increase] is directly related to the availability of housing for our students."

Sundberg says there have been other changes to the student recruitment process that she believes also could help, but she knows from past experience that a lack of housing has caused the college to lose students.

As for "The Villas" themselves, Sundberg has the same feeling many who toured the facility Tuesday felt: why weren't these accommodations available when they went to school.
