Feds Want No Vacancies at Housing Authority Sites
The federal agency overseeing Knox County's affordable housing program wants each site to reach full occupancy.

Knox County Housing Authority Executive Director Margie Hulick says the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development mailed the request Tuesday.

"They want us to give them plans, and there'll be multiple phone calls for the next two months before their fiscal year ends, which is September 31 [sic], that they would like to see 100% occupancy in all the properties," Hulick said.

"You can't do that, can you?" Commissioner Roger Peterson said.

"[It's] lofty," Hulick said.

Peterson and other board members cited turnover rates and other factors in 100-percent occupancy being unachievable. Peterson provoked many laughs by asking if HUD was smart enough to realize that.

But Hulick says, "That's our goal." The housing authority is currently booked at 98-percent occupancy.
