Knox County to Host Its Own Olympics
No need to travel to London or turn on the television to get your Olympic fix -- the Knox County Health Department is giving the public the chance to go for the gold all on their own.

It's the first event that's part of the Health Department's new "We Fit Together" project -- the Knox County Olympics, scheduled for Saturday morning.

Health Department Health Protection Director Monica Hendrickson tells WGIL the Olympics are really geared at kids, but anyone can particiate in the various events.

"We're going to have a 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, and then a one-mile walk and run," Hendrickson said. "We're trying to give out medals to the children who participate in the event. The actual total mileage for the mile run and walk, we're hoping to use as a motivator for other communities in Knox County to also host this event, and maybe have a winner for the Olympics, so to speak."

Hendrickson says it's important that children take part in the event, so that they're able to hold on to healthy habits for their entire lives.

The mini-Olympics is Saturday morning starting at 8am at Abingdon High School. There is no cost to participate.
