White Looks To Continue As Secretary of State
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is launching a campaign for a fourth term in office. He kicked off his campaign with rallies Tuesday in Chicago, Springfield and Marion.

White served 16 years as a state legislator, and six years as recorder of deeds in Cook County, before being elected secretary of state for the first time in 1998. He inherited an office that was embroiled in a scandal that sent dozens of people to prison, but cleaned it up by banning employees from making campaign contributions to him, and by hiring an independent inspector general, former U.S. Attorney James B. Burns, who is still on the job today.

White has received more than 2.2 million votes in each of his last two elections, and was the state's leading vote-getter in 2002, winning in all 102 counties.

White, born in Alton, is now 75. Outside his political career, he is best known as the founder of the Jesse White Tumblers, a traveling troupe of young acrobats. He served was an Army paratrooper, and he was a center fielder in the Cubs organization, rising to Triple-A. He also was a school teacher for 33 years.

The only Republican who has announced a bid for secretary of state is Robert Enriquez, a businessman from Aurora.
