City Council Questions Library's Property Tax Levy
The Galesburg City Council has once again called into question just how much the Galesburg Public Library gets in property tax money.

Aldermen discussed the library's $1.3 Million levy during a larger work session on property taxes. The concern is not charging property owners an arm and a leg for property taxes, while somehow getting more money into the city's pension funds in light of the state crisis to that end, and ongoing underfunding.

7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says while he wasn't prepared to make a final decision Monday night, he does think levy requests need to be carefully scrutinized.

"I think we should be open to an increase, just as we need to be open to an increase in everything else," Karlin said, "I don't think any of us should be pinned into positions as of now."

Many aldermen agreed that everything should be on the table, but some said the library's $1.3 Million request should be left alone, as the library has said in the past their budget is very lean.

In any of three property tax levy scenarios presented to aldermen, the city only projected slight increases in the library's levy.
