A Garbage Rate Increase Could Be in Knoxville's Future
Rising fuel cost, truck maintenance, labor and land fill fees are all reasons why Alderman and head of the Sanitation Committee Rob Derham has put a proposal on the table to increase garbage rates.

Derham told the Knoxville City Council raising rates could help bring in money to the city and help with city's cash flow problem.

He tells WGIL what the increase would mean for residents monthly bill.

"Potentially we're looking at a $1.50 a household per month increase. So we're at $8.50 now we would go to $10 per month. That includes your regular garbage pick up and your weekly recycling."

The the proposal will now to go second reading and a final decision in two weeks.

Derham says if approved the rate increase could come as early as next month.

The board also approved the resignation of City Clerk Pam Eagle--Charlie Gruner was appointed as the new City Clerk.
