October Brings Another Spike in Unemployment
The unemployment rate in Galesburg and Knox County continues to climb.

The rates for October are 8.6 percent in Galesburg and 7.2 percent in Knox County, increases that range from 4-tenths to 6-tenths of a percentage point over September's unemployment rates. Jobless rates also went up in Warren, Fulton and Henry counties. The increases were 6-tenths to 6.5 percent in Henry, 4-tenths to 6.4 percent in Warren, and 3-tenths to 7.1 in Fulton. Henderson County's unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.1 percent.

The numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security are significantly higher than those from October of last year. The rates range from 1.6 percent higher in Henry County to 3.4 percent in the city of Galesburg.

IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says even though many areas of the state showed stable unemployment numbers, it's clear that the national erosion of jobs is taking its toll on Illinois workers. The department reports year-over-year unemployment in October increased in all 12 of the state's metropolitan areas. It marked the 18th consecutive month an increase occurred.

Locally, the number of unemployed in Knox County grew to 1,872 in October. That's 117 more people without jobs than in September. Galesburg's total shows 66 more people out of work between September and October.

O'Donnell says a federal jobs program with an emphasis in investment infrastructure is needed to stem job losses.
