Burris Explains His Version of "Public Option"
In demanding a "public option" in health insurance reform legislation, U.S. Sen. Roland Burris wants to be clear about what a public option is.

Burris wants people to know that a public option would not be taxpayer-funded. It would collect premiums just like any insurer, but it would establish nationwide competition against for-profit insurance companies. Burris says the public doesn't always understand; he says polling shows the more accurate information they have, the more they want a public option to be part of any reform.

Burris says public-option competition is important because 94 percent of the nation's markets are not competitive for health insurance. In Illinois, two companies have 69 percent of the market.

Burris says there is misinformation being spread about the public option. He says it is coming from opponents falling into two categories: insurance companies that don't want competition, and Republicans who don't want President Obama to be able to claim a policy victory.
