More Women Seeking Drug and Alcohol Treatment
The Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association is noting a spike in the number of women seeking treatment. It says the number of people in state-supported drug and alcohol addiction treatment between 1995 and 2007 is up 21.7 percent for men, and 41 percent for women.

Association CEO Sara Muscato Howe speculates that there are two reasons for the increase in female addicts: One, it's more acceptable these days to seek help; and, women have more stress as they deal with jobs, positions of leadership, children, and the economy.

The total numbers still show that more men are in treatment than women. In 1995, 30,545 adult Illinois women received treatment in state-funded treatment centers, and 65,992 adult men received treatment. In 2007, 52,045 adult women were in treatment, compared to 84,326 adult men. For young people, the number of girls in treatment increased 53 percent, and the number of boys jumped 54 percent.

Howe hopes the numbers help bring back scarce state dollars that have been cut due to the lagging economy.
