Galesburg City Council Tables Taxes
There was speculation at the last City Council meeting that the City of Galesburg's tax rates could be a problem for several alderman.

At Monday night's Galesburg City Council meeting, alderman decided to table several tax votes after the Electric Use tax increase failed 2-5.

Alderman Peter Schwartzman made the point that if the council is going to refuse to raise the taxes, then a discussion about what services will be cut needs to take place.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin seconded that point saying that as a community, there are a lot of interests that need to be balanced.

"We need to be conscious of making our city affordable and that's always very important. I think we also have to understand that investing in out community actually takes dollars. Every business owner that I know would have more income if there were more people living here."

The council voted 5-2 to table the gas use tax and expressed the same sentiment about the property levy.

Several alderman expressed concerns about raising the taxes because of the city's push for energy aggregation.

Without the taxes, the city will experience a revenue shortfall.
