Knoxville School Board Talks Tax Levy
A final decision was not made on what the 2013 tax levy will be for the Knoxville School District but Superintendent Steven Wilder talked with the board about what their options are.

Wilder Monday night gave the board three different examples of how they can handle the tax levy but Wilder told the board cuts in general state aid have really left the district with only one option.

"We've be able to maintain the level of services for our students and staff despite some decreases in state funding, but my recommendation today would be that we need to increase the tax levy by 4.29 [percent]."

Wilder says over the past two years the district has lost more than $600,000 in general state aid and they have to find a way to make up the loss.

Wilder says a tax increase under five percent won't make up the difference, but will help them move in the right direction in terms of revenue.

He says he's disappointed it will take such an increase to make up for the short falls of the state, but they have students in the classrooms and teachers doing their jobs everyday.

A vote on the levy will be December 17.
