Abingdon Sets Property Tax Levy
It's possible your property tax bill in Abingdon won't be much different than last year -- at least for city services.

The Abingdon City Council Monday night voted to approve a property tax levy amount of around $256,000 -- virtually even with what was asked for last year, even though property values in the city have gone up a little to $20,000,000 versus around $19.9 million the year before.

Abingdon Mayor Roger Stegall says while it keeps finances tight, he thinks this is good news for residents.

"For the past several years, even going back into when Steve Darmer was Mayor, Abingdon has been doing very well on this and has not had to raise taxes or had to ask for extra money and we came out very well on this," says Stegall.

City Attorney Jack Ball told aldermen because property values are going up so little, it's impossible to ask for much more money than in past years.

Aldermen Monday night tabled a proposal to switch energy providers for city-owned properties, until more research can be done.

They did approve purchasing $50 grocery store gift certificates for every city employee and official as a holiday gift.
