City Council Receives Safety Plans
The Galesburg City Council Monday received a Safety Plan for South Street near the Knox College Campus.

Aldermen passed the measure 6-1 with Russell Fleming the lone dissenting vote.

The plan comes after Knox student Tundun Lawani was hit and subsequently killed by a car.
I
n the short term, the plan calls for upgrading the street lights and conducting a pedestrian and speed study.

City Manager Todd Thompson told aldermen that they're looking to implement the plan into the 2013 budget.

"And one of the things we've found is there's some confusion about exactly what Illinois' law is with respect to cross walks. Several years ago they changed it from yield to stop and drivers are obligated to stop if a pedestrians anywhere in the cross walk and these signs will help to reinforce that."

Longer term the plan suggests reducing the speed limit and putting in a center median.

Knox College President Teresa Amott told the council that this plan will help both drivers and students harmonize their goals.

Thompson went on to say the City already has funds budgeted, and it's simply a matter of adjusting next years budget to reflect that.
