Supporting Small Business on Saturday
If you still have holiday shopping to do, local businesses are suggesting you try doing some of it Saturday at a store that doesn't have the word "Mart" in its name.

This is "Small Business Saturday" -- an effort started by American Express a couple years ago to encourage shopping at local businesses, and while it was started by a major corporation, it's one that other organizations are latching on to.

Like the Galesburg-area Chamber of Commerce, whose Executive Director Steven Brody tells the WGIL Evening News small business drives the Galesburg economy.

"Just look around the downtown area," Brody said. "They are chock-full of small businesses there. You can even go up and down Henderson Street, along Main Street -- there's so many individuals who decided to branch out and start a small business, because they want to live out that American dream, and have that entrepreneurial spirit."

Brody says it's crucial for small businesses to thrive and survive, so that's why the purpose of Small Business Saturday is so important: getting those small businesses exposure during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

Some retailers may even have Small Business Saturday special deals.
