City Council Looks at Tax Options
The Galesburg City Council held a special budget work session last night after aldermen were unable to settle on the city's proposed tax rates at last week's meeting.

The council looked over the fiscal year 2013 budget which included several special projects.

Among the items being partially funded was a baseball field - which is part of the District 205 master facilities plan.

Aldermen expressed strong disagreement with providing funding for the project saying the district has already raised sales taxes to pay for the project.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin was a lonely voice for support, saying the school district is trying to bring people to the City.

"I can see why we would understand that, that we kind of focus on necessities and as is needed, rather than the things that are motivating the school district. With that said I think that we should support this."

The proposed Library and East Main Street Underpass were also among the special projects included in the budget.

Options for funding the 2013 budget were also discussed as City Manager Todd Thompson gave the Council options based on their preferences from last week's meeting.

Several aldermen said they would tell Thompson what their preference was in the morning.

The council plans to have more meetings as budget discussions continue.

Aldermen Wayne Allen and Wayne Dennis were unable to publicly give their support to one of the more than 6 taxing options presented by the city.
