New Silas Elementary May go to Vote
District 205 held discussions yesterday on whether or not to proceed with plans to build a new Silas-Willard elementary school.

The original 110 million dollar master facilities plan only called for repairs to the school.

The implementation committee gave the unofficial go ahead to pursue the route of building a new building, moving the project into Phase Two.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Guy Cahill says the district intends to develop two different plans for the voters.

"There are ways to do it without involving the voters, like building a brand new addition adn then tearing everything down but the party wall. We've said all along we don't want to do that and in fact the only reason we're talking about replacing it is because the board said why spend that kind of money and have the same old bones just looking different."

The cost of developing another plan will cost the district an additional 50-thousand dollars.

Members of the plan's implementation committee voiced concerns that if the voters don't approve the district's intent to build a new Silas, the 11-million dollar project wouldn't be done correctly.

If a new school is to be built, the district's next chance for voters to approve the measure would be in April's consolidated elections.
