Making Reading Exciting
Students at Churchill and Lombard Junior High are participating in the Reading at the Crossroads program connecting students with authors.

The program takes place every three years and this year students are reading the material of Author Sharon Draper.

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth graders are reading one of three books written by Draper before getting the chance to meet the Author in person.

Churchill Principal Jim Wilson tells the WGIL Morning News students are genuinely excited to read the book assigned to them because in the end they'll get to discuss what they've read with the Author.

"I think they're very involved with it," says Wilson. "I think the fact that a quote celebrity is going to be coming in - they want to have their best effort and their best work put out and the books themselves catch the kids."

The books students read are "Tears of a Tiger," "Copper Sun," and "Out of My Mind."

All three books tackle tough topics like underage drinking, slavery and disability.

Draper will spend Wednesday with students at Churchill and Thursday at Lombard. Tuesday night Draper will have an open discussion with the public at Churchill's auditorium starting at seven o'clock.
