Humane Society Braves the Storm
People and cars weren't all that were affected by Thursday's severe winter weather. Animals were, too.

Erin Buckmaster with the Knox County Humane Society says her department responded to numerous calls of pets getting loose and running at large yesterday.

And Buckmaster tells WGIL to say the least, that's not good.

"We'd just like to remind people to please get their pets out of the bad weather. I think sometimes we run to shelter and forget about our friends that are tied up outside. It's very important if your pet is tied up outside please take it in and give it proper shelter till the storm has passed."

Buckmaster says many outside dogs can only take so much of the cold, especially pets with shorter fur.

So she says make sure if pets are outside, dog houses are elevated and they have plenty of blankets.

But she says if falling trees is a possibility, take your dog into a barn or garage.

Buckmaster also recommends buying an electric dog food dish, that can keep their water from freezing.
