Winter Makes its Presence Known in Galesburg
If you'll pardon the quote, the weather outside certainly was frightful Thursday.

The National Weather Service foretasted snow with high winds Thursday, and boy were they ever.

Snow totals for Galesburg aren't yet available, but only about two inches of snow fell by late Thursday afternoon.

Other parts of northwest Illinois and into Iowa got much more snow -- over six inches in some spots.

But for here, the wind was just as big of a story.

The Weather Service says an area near Galesburg clocked a gust as high as 65 miles per hour at one point.

Many areas clocked wind gusts as high as 50 miles per hour many times throughout most of the day.

Accidents were aplenty. Galesburg Police responded to dozens here, with dozens more reported in other areas.

Accidents ranged from a jackknifed semi on Interstate 74 and in other ares, to reports of at least two school bus accidents in Warren County, one of which resulted in minor injuries.

Authorities report that conditions on local highways got worse as the overnight happened, so they're advising not to travel until later in the day.
