City Takes Next Step In Aggregation Process
Galesburg voters passed an energy aggregation referendum in November and now the City has decided to start the proposal process.

Aldermen approved the City's Final Plan of governance and RFP at Monday night's City Council meeting.

Aggregation seeks to lower residents monthly utility bills by opening up the municipal energy supply to competitive bids.

The City of Galesburg has been working with DaCott Energy as a consultant in the aggregation process.

City Manager Todd Thompson says the RFP would go out right after the council approved the measure.

"Upon completion of the bid process, an award will be recommended to the City Council," says Thompson. "As to the bid that will be most cost effective for citizens we estimate that would be returned to the council sometime in the February time frame."

The companies responding to the City's request must not have declared bankruptcy in the last five years and can not have been involved in any litigation for failure to perform contract obligations.

Bids for the potential energy suppliers are due January 7th. The winning bid will be selected on that following Thursday.

Fifth Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman requested that City Administration include an option for individuals not currently on the Ameren package be able to join the aggregated supply.

"I've learned that some municipalities overlook that piece," says Schwartzman. "If you're providing your own energy as a user you should be able to take part in the city's package and not be excluded."

City Manager Todd Thompson agreed to update the council if that were to be included in the proposal.
